After two years of construction, Winnipeg's new and expanded Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada is flying its wings, or rather opening its doors to welcome visitors.
The 86,000-square-foot building is located on more than 1.5 hectares (four acres) of land near the intersection on Wellington Avenue, in a dramatic position overlooking the Winnipeg International Airport bridge, with a large glass facade suspended over six floors. There are two more than a dozen on the ground.
It's a marked change from the museum's former location, off Ferry Road and hidden behind a stripped-down old brick hangar. It was a place you knew – don't pass while driving.
"The first thing people see when they come into Winnipeg [from the airport] is our facility. You can't leave the airport without flying," said Terry Slobodian, president and CEO of the museum, which has been in operation since 1974. .

Pre-pandemic, when the airport was operating at normal capacity, 4.5 million vehicles per year would pass through where Mosk now stands, he noted.

The $27-million building itself is part of an overall $48-million tag for the museum's overhaul project, which houses rich art displays through 14 immersive galleries and two floors.
There is also an exploration gallery where children can play, interactive zones, a museum store, a bar and an archive room.
While the old room could only fit in so many exhibits, the new room offers more space to walk around, large windows with lots of natural light, and seating and "a place to appreciate the beauty of the aircraft and buildings." Slobodian said.

The seats also provide a comfortable way to watch. Six aircraft hang from the ceiling, including a Tiger Moth Tutor Snowbird jet.
"No one in Canada had more than one aircraft suspended from the ceiling, so it was a huge challenge, but we were able to pull it off," said Slobodian.
There is also an outdoor airplane plaza on the side of the building, which has a large door to send planes in and out.

The Aviation Museum of Western Canada, as it was originally called — before Queen Elizabeth gave it royal title in 2014 — began with the idea of its five founders to preserve a rich heritage that includes bush planes, military and commercial aircraft.
They got the first one from the Bellanca aircruiser that was wrecked in the woods of northern Ontario.
"There are all kinds of aircraft that are really, really good," said Steve Pajot, who spent seven years restoring an RCAF CF-104 Starfighter - the first to fly in Canada - for the museum.

This hearkens back to the golden age of commercial travel, when the seats were bigger, the diners were nicer and the windows were covered with curtains.

In addition to its artifacts, the museum strives to show the complex history of travel, trade and relationships, as well as to honor and remember the history of indigenous people in aviation, according to its site.
Slobodian believes the depth of the story is telling and points out that the new facility will contribute more to Winnipeg's tourism offering, which has grown in recent years with the addition of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in 2014 and the Koumajuk Ga Inuit last year.
"Winnipeg has gone through a cultural renaissance," he said. "We are one in the series, but we will be one new."
