The Dysert Unified School District will offer full-day kindergarten at 19 schools next year after voters signed off on an $18 million repeal in November.

The West Valley's largest school district held kindergarten fairs this week to give parents and children an idea of what to expect.

Full-day kindergarten is best for students academically, emotionally and socially, said Molly Garcia, principal of Luke Elementary School.
"It's something we believe very strongly as a school system — our kids need full-day kindergarten," she said.
Had Dysert's repeal failed, the district would have been forced to resume half-day kindergarten. Since last year, next year's class will not miss classes such as science, social studies, art, music and physical education.
"We play with things in life," said Niki Trezzo, a kindergarten teacher at Luke's Elementary School. "We plant things and watch them grow, many things that we don't get to see very often."

Trezzo's students come from El Mirage, Surprise and Youngstown, and the school is a stone's throw from Luke Air Force Base.
Half-day kindergarten isn't an option for foundation resident and mother of seven Katrina Anderson. Her youngest daughter will start kindergarten in the fall.
"I have a son who works part-time and he's struggling with it," Anderson said. "I don't think you'll learn anything in two hours and 45 minutes."
Garica said Luke Elementary takes a team-based approach to ensure that children who are only able to go to half-day kindergarten this year have all the resources they need in the future.
